Wifi network Technology
Based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Wi-Fi is defined as any wireless local area network product which allows electronic devices to participate in networking. This wireless local area technology uses an ultra high frequency band of 2.4 GHZ and super high frequency band of 5 GHZ. Electronic devices like smartphones, personal computers, printers,digital cameras,tablets, audio players and certain video game brands can use wifi by connecting to the internet through the wireless access points, commonly known as the hotspot.
Wifi has a range of between 20meters to several square kilometers when boosted by multiple access points that overlap. Wifi can access areas where radio waves can not penetrate.
For electronic devices to connect to Wifi local area network, they have to be equipped with an interface controller that is enabled to use wireless network. This controller is commonly referred to as the station. All stations that are within the range will receive the transmission on this channel. Data is transmitted in packets using a carrier wave commonly referred to as Ethernet frames. Each of the stations that are within range are constantly tuned to the radio frequency channel to pick up the available data transmission.
Wifi has very many benefits: It can be used where network cables can not be run, It also allows a more cheap deployment of local area networks. The different brands of hotspots and network interface are compatible and can operate at a basic level of service. The wifi alliance has designated some wifi products as backward compatible meaning they can work anywhere in the world.
However, Wifi is less secure than data cables and is more prone to hackers. The intruder does not need a physical connection to access the network. There are various encryption technologies that are being developed by the Wifi Alliance to improve the security of the wifi network. some of them include WEP(though this was very poor and proved to be very easy to break),WPA, WPA2 and WPS. These allow the users to secure their networks using strong passwords.
Some new protocols for quality of service have made wifi more suitable for voice and video applications which are latency sensitive in nature and also use less power.
There is also a problem of increased network redundancy with an increase in the number of wifi access points. However, Implementations like home and office networks eliminate this problem.
The wifi protected set up is a security standard which allows embedded devices with limited geografical user interface to connect easily to the internet. There are 2 configurations in the wifi protected set up: the pin configuration and the push Button configuration. These configurations use less power and and are very secure and effective.
There is no risk from the long term exposure to the radiations that are produced by the wifi networks. Research has it that radiation from a 20 minutes mobile call is equivalent to the amount of radiation produced by wifi for a period of one year. There has also been no evidence on the adverse health effects caused by the radiations.
